Technically speaking, it\u2019s when a child aligns with one parent and rejects its other parent for reasons that are not warranted. According to The Parental Alienation Study Group, at least 3.9 million children are \u201cmoderately to severely\u201d alienated from a parent. Put another way, there are three times as many children who are alienated from a parent than there are children with autism. \n<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\">This is, obviously, a staggering number. But what are the effects of parental alienation on children? This was the question of a study conducted by psychologists Caitlin Bentley and Mandy Matthewson of the University of Tasmania.\n<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\">In order to pursue this inquiry, they recruited adult participants who had a history of parental alienation. From there, they conducted semi-structured interviews, asking a series of exploratory questions about the alienation. Their narratives were then analyzed for themes.\n<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\">The results were striking. Seven themes were identified, revealing the breadth and depth of the effects of alienation well into adulthood. A selective overview of the study\u2019s findings is provided below.<\/p><br>\n\n<h2 style=\"color:#e60d31; font-size: 30px; font-weight:400; letter-spacing: 2px;\">Alienating Behavior and Impact<\/h2>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\">Adult children reported a multitude of alienating behaviors that damaged their relationship with the Target Parent and their own well-being. This theme broke down into seven sub-themes:<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Abuse and control.<\/span>  Participants were emotionally and physically abused by the Alienating Parent. For example, they were made to feel fear or guilt when they didn\u2019t comply with the Alienating Parent\u2019s view of the Target Parent.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Denigration of the targeted parent<\/span> \u2014 to the point where it damaged the child\u2019s bond with the Target Parent.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Adultification<\/span> \u2014 in which their parent inappropriately disclosed information and sought support during custody disputes.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Disrupting alienated adult child and targeted parent relationship.<\/span> The bond between children and the Target Parent was damaged. Some moved to different states or overseas, making a relationship or even communication with the Target Parent difficult. Others were told that the Target Parent didn\u2019t love them.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Perceptions of the Alienating Parent\u2019s characteristics<\/span> \u2014 including self-absorption, criticalness, and lacking in empathy and insight into how their behavior impacts others\u2014even when confronted by their child.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\"> Neglect.<\/span> Basic needs and safety were disregarded.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Alienated adult child experience suppressed.<\/span> Participants pushed down their thoughts, emotions, and memories, particularly regarding the Target Parent.<\/p><br>\n\n<h2 style=\"color:#e60d31; font-size: 30px; font-weight:400; letter-spacing: 2px;\">Mental Health<\/h2>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\">Adult children reported mental health struggles both as children and adults. This theme consisted of three sub-themes:\n<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Mental health difficulties.<\/span> All of the participants experienced mental health issues, ranging from anxiety and PTSD to suicidal ideation, which they traced to their Alienating Parent\u2019s abuse.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Self-esteem.<\/span> Participants reported having low self-esteem and low confidence in themselves and their abilities.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Substance use.<\/span> Alienated adult children disclosed using alcohol and drugs, for some at an early age, in order to cope with the abuse.<\/p><br>\n\n<h2 style=\"color:#e60d31; font-size: 30px; font-weight:400; letter-spacing: 2px;\">Relationship Difficulties<\/h2>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\">Participants described having difficulties across friendships and romantic relationships. Five sub-themes surfaced:<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Difficulty relating to peers.<\/span> Participants felt different from and unable to confide their experience of parental alienation with other children.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Fear of loss.<\/span> Most participants expressed fears of losing a relationship, causing them to avoid conflicts in relationships or even entering relationships.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Difficulty trusting<\/span> Participants had difficulty believing that someone would support them, and thus they hid their difficulties from others.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Dysfunctional and abusive relationships.<\/span> Adult children often chose partners that were as abusive as their Alienating Parent, sometimes in a desperate effort to feel loved. Others stayed in unhealthy partnerships to avoid divorce at all costs.\n<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Struggle to maintain healthy relationships<\/span> Participants felt that a lack of positive role models, mental health problems, and poor relationship skills made relationships challenging.<\/p><br>\n\n<h2 style=\"color:#e60d31; font-size: 30px; font-weight:400; letter-spacing: 2px;\">Learning and Development<\/h2>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\">Participants believed that the alienation stunted their development and capacity to learn. Two sub-themes emerged:<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Identity.<\/span> Being told that the Target Parent was bad, children were conscious of the ways in which they were like the Target Parent and felt shame about it.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Education and employment.<\/span> Most participants had difficulty with learning and focusing on school, which altered the course of their lives. They felt blocked from fulfilling their academic potential at school because the Alienating Parent\u2019s needs came before their own<\/p><br>\n\n<h2 style=\"color:#e60d31; font-size: 30px; font-weight:400; letter-spacing: 2px;\">Grief and Loss<\/h2>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\">Participants felt a pervasive sense of grief and loss, which was tied to their experience of alienation. Five sub-themes were found:<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Anger and emotional pain<\/span> \u2014 largely for the \u201cinjustice\u201d and \u201cthe mess\u201d their parents made.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Feeling they missed out<\/span> \u2014 on a childhood, including learning basic skills (e.g., cooking) and an early loss of innocence.\n<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Guilt.<\/span> Most participants felt the Alienating Parent made them feel guilty. They also felt guilty about the ways they treated the Target Parent, even though they knew they weren\u2019t to blame<\/p>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Grieving the loss of the relationship with the Targeted Parent.<\/span> One participant shared: \u201cMost of my childhood memories are just, \u2018Oh God, even up until the age of 40, I just want my dad, I just want my dad.\u2019\u201d\n<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Disappointment with their relationship with the Target Parent.<\/span> Some participants felt the Target Parent had moved forward with a new relationship or family, gave up on them too soon, or was disinterested in them.<\/p><br>\n\n<h2 style=\"color:#e60d31; font-size: 30px; font-weight:400; letter-spacing: 2px;\">Disconnection and Dysfunction<\/h2>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\">Participants described \u201csegregated\u201d family lives. Two sub-themes were identified.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Disconnection.<\/span> Participants felt they had abnormal family lives, with isolated childhoods and limited or irregular contact with extended family. Some had cut off contact with the Alienating Parent.<\/p>\t\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Intergenerational transmission of trauma<\/span> Participants observed that their parents had dysfunctional relationships with their own parents, and that the dysfunctional behavior had been learned.<\/p><br>\n\n<h2 style=\"color:#e60d31; font-size: 30px; font-weight:400; letter-spacing: 2px;\">Coping and Healing<\/h2>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\">Participants shared how they coped with alienation, giving rise to four sub-themes:<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Coping and resilience.<\/span> While many participants coped by themselves, others leaned on the Target Parent. Some developed a bond with a caring and protective person.\n<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">Reunification attempts.<\/span> Many participants tried to reunite with their Target Parent. For some, this was healing, while others were ambivalent about reconnecting.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-family: roboto; color: #29272a; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 300; line-height:30px;\"><span style=\"color:#e60d31;\">The healing process.<\/span> Participants tried to make sense of their pasts, with some seeking therapy. Some found that identifying their experience as parental alienation was healing: \u201cAs I got a bit older, I decided to go see a therapist and that started to put things in place, and break the normalization...
